Dear Sisters and Friends,

This last Tuesday, I accidentally sent a draft of this post when I hit the wrong button. Apologies. Hopefully the silver lining is that you got a whiff of a provocative phrase ‘petromasculinity’ — and began mulling over what it could possibly mean and how it might relate to this moment in time that we are all living through.

A few months ago, my friend and fellow climate activist, Scott, introduced the term to me to me and sent me a few articles. Ever since, the word has been reverberating in the back of my brain asking for some attention. So now I’ll give it a stab.

As best I can tell, the term “petro-masculinity” was coined by Cara Daggett in her 2018 paper “Petro-masculinity: Fossil Fuels and Authoritarian Desire.”

I like to think big picture, systemically, and then zoom in.
